Harlem Renaissance in the3 21st century
I think studying the Harlem Renaissance is important becuase it was a point in history when a class of people who had been held down began to rise. It was a period when artistic expression peeked and it allows us a unique insight as to how black artists truly felt. I think reading the writings of those of the time speak much more than a history text- it's personal. I think it relates to today because we are people and people are often curious about how others live. I think that these writings, music, etc. are still influential pieces of work. It would be our loss as a society to forget art of any time period. We can still use it to look back on a generation of people at a crucial turning point in thier lives and also just enjoy the art for what it was from one person to another.

I think that when we look at paintings we never really try to think of the time period it was writen. When we look at alot of African American art that came out of time periods, such as the Harlem Renaissance, we can distinctly see struggles and the turmoil that has been laid before us. I appreciate that much more now that I have taken this class.
Reading the works of many writers of the Harlem Renaissance is a much more personal look into the Harlem Renaissance as opposed to using a textbook to learn about the time period. I agree that people today should not forget the artists, writers, and musicians of the Harlem Renaissance. These African Americans produced quality literature, artwork, and music that deserves to be appreciated no matter how long ago they were created.
I agree, I think that without these important contributions and influences from artists of the 1920’s, that society today would be missing something important. Can you imagine what music would be like without hip hop and rap, which derived from jazz?
The Harlem Renaissance was definitely a very influential time period. As you mentioned, a race that was held down for so long finally began to overcome it's hardships. More importantly, the ability for these people to overcome such difficult circumstances shows the most through their art- literature, painting, music, etc. I really like how you stated that the novels and other forms of writing that we read in class were a lot more interesting because it is on a more personal level. I could not agree more!
i like your comments. it was simple and to the point, but make you realize the utter importance of the time period we just studied. Life today is tied to yesterday. Black or white it doesnt mastter like michael jackson said/ we can see the struggle and the turmoil and feel it too by reading into the HARLEM RENNAISANCE
You are right about how many are curious about how others live. Much of what happened or came about during the Harlem Renaissance became very influential to today's times.
Nice post. I agree with you. The Harlem Renaissance is important. It does show us the rise of a group of people, and it's amazing to see what African Americans have overcome. Your bring up a very good point about the writing being better then a text because it's personal. I think everyone can understand this time period better through this rather then a history class and text books.
